Culture and belonging are key conceptual and empirical concerns of my research, grounded in engagement with state and non-state actors and researchers in the Asia-Pacific and globally. I serve on the Board of the Research Committee on Race, Nationalism, Indigeneity and Ethnicity (RC05) of the International Sociological Association. I also serve as the Communications Secretary for the same research committee.
I served as editor in chief of The Australian Journal of Human Rights 2011-2018. I launched and co-convene the interdisciplinary Forced Migration Research Network at UNSW that has generated local and international research collaborations and impact. I have held visiting appointments at the Institute for Political Science, University Vienna (2018), Center for Place, Culture and Politics, City University New York CUNY (2014) and the Centre for International Studies (CERI) Science Po (2011) and I am a fellow at the Institute for Migration and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), University Osnabrück. I am a Board Member of the Academy in Exile, Free University Berlin & Duisburg-Essen University.
Teaching Experience
I have over eighteen years teaching experience at undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate levels in key curriculum in anthropology, sociology, social theory and global studies.
Teaching responsibility and course design for core sociology and anthropology curriculum and specialist courses in race and migration, citizenship and human rights.
