George Pavlidis

Assistant Professor

I am a graduate psychologist with a PhD in social gerontology. My research is located at the intersection of social gerontology and psychology, currently with a focus on loneliness and exclusion from social relations in older age.

Research at the intersection of social gerontology and psychology

I am conducting my work with a focus on adult development and ageing.

I am a graduate psychologist with a PhD in social gerontology, experienced in teaching (certified by HEA) in undergraduate and postgraduate level.

At LiU, I am conducting my work with a focus on social networks, loneliness, and exclusion in older age. I have been involved in many applied and research project, funded from national and international institutions.

Teaching

I coordinate several courses in the Division of Ageing and social Change (ASC) and teach in other courses as well. Since 2022, I am study director in the ASC Division.

Networks

I am a board member of 50plus Hellas, a Greek organization that deals with issues of people older than 50.

Research

Exclusion from social relations in older age

Currently, I am a member of the GENpath project research team, examining the gendered pathways and the outcomes of exclusion from social relations in older age. In addition, I conduct my independent project that examines the effect of exclusion from social relations on cognitive and functional decline among older persons in Sweden.

GENPATH - GENdered PATHways of social exclusion in later life

GENPATH analyses gender differences in social exclusion across Europe. It asks for its roots and consequences in health and wellbeing in old age.

How are healthy older people influenced by a lack of social contact and relationships? This is to be studied by George Pavlidis in a three-year project funded by FORTE – the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare.

Social relations are important for people. But this does not mean that solitude is always harmful. On the contrary, research shows that a small minority of older people are alone and that a considerable proportion of them are happy with being so.
