Magnus Karlsson

Senior Associate Professor

Teacher and researcher in electronics and electronic systems. In particular, high-frequency electronics and systems for communication. Applied electronics, system integration, technology that works in a larger context is especially important.

Presentation

Electronics and electrical engineering have permeated both my educational choices and my professional career. I have been an active researcher and teacher for many years. Educationally, I have a degree in electronics from technician - master- PhD to associate professorship.

My research has several branches. The first is components and system solutions for communication electronics, especially wireless communication electronics. Mainly antenna and antenna-related components. High-performance radio front-end parts with a high degree of circuit board integration. The focus is on making high-performance components into efficient system solutions.

Another track is microwave technology with slightly higher powers (a few kW in average power) than what is normally used for communication. Mainly for industrial heating applications.

Another track is the Internet of Things (IoT), technical solutions for various societal needs. Participating in projects with a focus on digitization solutions for monitoring and maintenance of sensitive buildings.

With an electromagnetic compatibility laboratory here at Campus Norrköping, everything with electromagnetic properties of electronics is extra interesting. EMC properties and methods for achieving good EMC characteristics. Radio and antenna experiments are just as interesting. That the electronics are safe and reliable from a holistic perspective, sends and receives the signals it should and does not emit anything it should not. Simply electronics with good electromagnetic safety and function.

Research

Teaching

I teach four courses for the master programme in Electronics and Systems Design here at Linköping University. Courses in circuit board design and manufacturing, radio frequency electronics, antenna theory and technology, and electromagnetic compatibility. I supervise and examine a handful of advanced level degree projects annually, usually exciting projects in collaboration with companies in the electronics industry.

In addition to conducting my own teaching, I have the privilege of being the chairman of the program planning group for the master programme in Electronics and Systems Design, the body that leads the continuous work for a well-functioning program with high relevance. I also serve as a regular member of the Program Board for Electrical Engineering, Physics and Mathematics, the program body responsible for programs in the aforementioned subject areas.
