My research focuses on visual function and the effects of visual therapy in patients with brain injury, tumor, or Covid-19 with a focus on how this affects the patient’s everyday life and activities.

Presentation

Visual impairment and visual therapy

The visual system is estimated to engage 30 cerebral areas and 300 pathways in order for the vision to function smoothly and visual impression to be interpreted correctly. The visual system is thus vulnerable to injuries and diseases such as brain injury, stroke, infections in the brain, tumors and Covd-19. Several studies have reported an impact on visual functions in between 50-80% of patients after an acquired brain injury. Mostly eye movement control and eye teaming can be affected, which can result in symptoms such as blurred vision, difficulty reading, double vision, eye strain, headaches, photosensitivity, feelings of dizziness in visually demanding environments. Vision therapy initially involves functional training in eye movement control and then the training is integrated into everyday activities based on the patient’s own needs. Research has shown that vision rehabilitation can improve visual function and patient-reported symptoms; however, more research is needed to explore this further.

My research focuses on visual function and the effects of visual therapy in patients with brain injury, tumor, or Covid-19 with a focus on how this affects the patient’s everyday life and activities.
