SSF Industrial Ph.D. grants are awarded for research and postgraduate training for an industrial doctoral student in collaboration with industry. The grant covers four to five years and shall lead to a doctoral degree. In 2024, SSF selected 12 projects from a wide range of research topics, each receiving a grant of SEK 3.25 million.

The aim of the program is to contribute to excellent research in the areas SSF finances: natural science, technology and medicine. The research shall promote cross-fertilization between academia and industry and contribute to the training of doctoral students in areas that are strategically relevant and strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness.

A strong foundation in cryptography

This year, one of the 12 funded projects was awarded to LiU and Onur Günlü, Associate Professor and Docent at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY), together with Professor Jan-Åke Larsson (ISY) and Sectra Communications AB. Onur Günlü commented on the grant as follows:

– Combining machine learning methods with Shannon-theoretic leakage metrics for the transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) marks an exciting new chapter in my research. At ICG and in Linköping, we have a strong foundation in cryptography and information theory, positioning this SSF project to achieve impactful outcomes.

– As the examiner and teacher of a major course on Cryptology, I am excited to share the latest developments in PQC with my students, enriching both their learning experience and my research. This synergy between teaching and research is invaluable, and I look forward to the combined benefits this SSF project will bring to both.

Fewer back problems with BetterBack

Most backs protest at least at once in a lifetime. Movement is often the best help. Therefore, researchers and physiotherapists in healthcare have developed a model of care “BetterBack (BättreRygg)”, which has now attracted international attention.
