Healthcare artificial intelligence technology concept

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is rapidly transforming the conditions for learning and professional practice in healthcare. The project aims to develop, implement, and evaluate pedagogical strategies that strengthen AI literacy among students in the Physiotherapy Program at Linköping University and clinical supervisors in healthcare. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, we explore how GAI can be used as a pedagogical tool in a responsible and ethical way.

Background

Digitalization and AI technologies create new opportunities for learning but also challenges related to academic integrity, critical thinking, and professional ethics. There is a need to integrate AI literacy into educational programs to prepare future healthcare professionals for a labor market where AI has the potential to become a natural part of clinical work.

Purpose, method och expected results

Purpose

The project has three main objectives:

  • Develop teaching and assessment methods that prevent inappropriate use of AI.
  • Strengthen students’ , teacher’s and clinical supervisors’ AI literacy and critical thinking.
  • Explore experiences, attitudes, and needs related to GAI in education and clinical practice.

Method

The project consists of several sub-studies:

  • Pedagogical development: Implementation of course design integrating AI literacy.
  • Student perspective: Focus groups and surveys on experiences and attitudes toward GAI.
  • Effect evaluation: Measurement of AI literacy using validated instruments.
  • Clinical perspective: Interviews with supervisors after targeted training aimed at strengthening AI literacy.

Expected results

The project is expected to contribute:

  • Evidence-based models for AI-integrated teaching that promote student learning.
  • Increased awareness and critical use of AI among students and supervisors.
  • Guidelines for ethical and pedagogically sustainable use of GAI in education and clinical settings.
