In this project we conduct a prospective injury and illness surveillance study in Swedish top-level athletes in collaboration with the Swedish Olympic Committee.
In this project we have implemented an injury and illness surveillance system for Swedish top-level athletes in collaboration with the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC). Athletes report weekly on training and competition, and occurrence of any health problems. The project provides feedback to SOC in their work with athlete health protection and to enable Swedish Olympic athletes to perform their best.
The project was initiated in 2022 and examples of research questions are:
• What is the incidence and prevalence of injury, illness and other health problems in Swedish top-level athletes?
• Which are the most common injuries and illness conditions, and how do they impact athlete availability to train and compete, and their performance?
• Are there differences in injury and illness patterns in different sports?
• Can we identify internal (athlete-related) and extrinsic (environmental) risk factors to support preventive measures?
Funding & collaboration
The project is funded by and carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Olympic Committee. Additional funding has been received from the Swedish Research Council for Sport Science.
