Inflammatory mediators in rheumatic diseases

Research

The overall aim of the research is to obtain an enhanced understanding of inflammation for the benefit of patients with inflammatory diseases, mainly rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). To accomplish this, we perform experimental studies in acute inflammation and innate immunology to target inflammatory mediators.
Key areas include the biological roles and synthesis regulation of acute phase proteins (including complement), autoantibodies, immune complexes, leukocyte respiratory burst reactions/frustrated phagocytosis, and platelets in inflammation.
In addition I have a long standing interest in biointerphases and biosensors.

Teaching

I am the Program Director of the international "Experimental & Industrial Biomedicine" Bachelor’s Programme, Director of Studies for a handful of courses for civil engineering students (Engineering Biology and Chemical Biology), and examiner for courses in, for example, Immunology and Cell Biology, and for Degree Projects.

Our research aims to understand the function of DNA methylation in the biology of human CD4+ T-cells, and use this knowledge to dissect its role in disease.

The impact of mercury, silver, gold and drugs on the immune system

We have studied adverse effects on the immune system by exposure in vitro and in vivo using both animal models and humans. This has enabled us to establish the threshold dose for effect of different modes of exposure to mercury, silver, and gold.
